Google's Gemini signed a ₹270 crore, three-year deal to sit on the IPL as an associate sponsor. ChatGPT is already a Women's Premier League premier partner. Rival labs are buying the BCCI's crowd — an Indian media market with a cricket flag — and that money will widen a gap that was already brutal.
Google’s Gemini signed a three-year Indian Premier League associate sponsorship, reported at about ₹270 crore, to begin with the 2026 season — roughly ₹90 crore a year for a seat below Tata’s title rights. OpenAI’s ChatGPT had already taken a premier-partner slot on the Women’s Premier League for 2026 and 2027, inside a ₹48 crore new-partner package with Kingfisher and Bisleri; SportsPro called it ChatGPT’s first formal league sponsorship. Two model labs, two BCCI properties, one commercial object.
That object is not “cricket.” It is the Indian television-and-phone crowd that the IPL still concentrates better than any other sporting product in the sport’s geography. Google went further on the broadcast layer: a category-exclusive co-presenting deal with JioStar for Search AI Mode on IPL 2026, which effectively blocked OpenAI from the same on-air real estate. The labs are not spreading bets across Test nations. They are bidding for the same funnel.
Consumer AI still has to prove people will pay. Until they do, the cheapest high-attention classroom in the world is a floodlit Indian night. India has already taught capital how to industrialize attention in exam prep. Cricket is the other national classroom. Gemini and ChatGPT are buying the front row.
AI is not discovering cricket. It is buying the only board that already owns the crowd.
The Board That Looks Like a Media Company
Outside estimates circulating in late August put the BCCI near $2.2 billion of net worth. Cricket Australia sits around $79 million, the England and Wales Cricket Board around $59 million, the Pakistan Cricket Board around $55 million. Those figures are market reconstructions, not a single audited “net worth” line the BCCI files like a listed company. They are still the right order of magnitude. The Indian board is more than twenty-five times the next-richest national board on that list. It is richer, on those estimates, than the next several boards stacked together.
That is why AI marketing budgets do not “enter cricket.” They enter the BCCI’s rights stack: IPL, WPL, the national team’s inventory after real-money gaming was pushed off jerseys and Apollo Tyres paid ₹579 crore to replace Dream11. Tata still holds the IPL title. The new money is associate and premier-partner inventory — the layer that scales with eyeballs, not with Test-match romance.
Streaming wars are the same species of fight: scale, exclusivity, the front door. JioStar selling Google a blocked category is that logic on a cricket night. A PCB or Cricket South Africa inventory package cannot clear the same internal rate of return. The sport’s governing map still has many flags. The advertising map has one.
Pay Scales That Do Not Pretend Otherwise
The human ledger is easier than the board estimates. The BCCI’s top Grade A retainer for 2025–26 is ₹5 crore a year. Five years of that retainer is ₹25 crore. Lucknow Super Giants paid ₹27 crore for Rishabh Pant at the 2025 mega auction — still the IPL record — and kept him at that fee through 2026. One franchise season outbid half a decade of the national board’s highest fixed retainership. (Pant has since been traded back toward Delhi at a revised ₹15 crore. The record bid is the point. The correction is the market admitting the first number was a face-of-the-league purchase.)
Pakistan’s 2025–26 central-contract cycle left Category A empty: no player cleared the old top band. The PCB has since rewritten 2026–27 pay into format tracks, which is a bureaucratic confession that the previous pyramid had no one left at the peak. A PSL franchise’s 2026 player purse is PKR 45 crore, about ₹14.6 crore or $1.6 million, extendable to PKR 50.5 crore for one extra overseas signing. That is the budget for a whole squad. It is about half of Pant’s record IPL season, converted into Indian rupees.

England is not broke in the same way. It is restructuring. The ECB completed private partnerships in The Hundred that valued the eight teams above £975 million and were billed as more than £500 million — about £520 million in the exclusivity-stage arithmetic — flowing into professional counties and the recreational game. Reliance took 49 percent of what is now MI London. That is not AI sponsorship. It is IPL-adjacent capital arriving as a solvency instrument for a county system that could not live on championship gates. K-shaped economies already describe this shape of gain: the property with the crowd gets a bid; the property without one sells a stake or rewrites the contract grid.
Scale Does Not Grow the Pie. It Names the Owner.
AI companies spend where a billion-user market can be shown a product in a single summer. The IPL is that surface. The WPL is the adjacent, cheaper, demographically useful surface. Neither is a development grant to Zimbabwe Cricket or a rescue for West Indies retainers. If Gemini’s ₹270 crore and ChatGPT’s WPL slot “grow cricket,” they grow the BCCI’s commercial density. Everyone else inherits a higher global price of talent — IPL auction inflation, overseas T20 availability — without the matching rights check.
The testable claim is the next rights cycle, not the press release. If OpenAI, Anthropic, or another lab starts buying BBL, SA20, or PSL inventory at Gemini-like multiples, the “cricket” story was real. If the next dollars stay inside BCCI and JioStar exclusives, the sport will keep looking global on the scorecard and Indian on the invoice. Capital that needs attention will keep writing the second line.
